Southend United have returned to League One thanks to a 7-6 win in a thrilling penalty shootout after Joe Piggott equalised for the Shrimpers with seconds left on the clock in Extra-Time.
Having ended 0-0 after 90 mins, Wycombe took the lead within the first 5 minutes of extra time. Joe Jacobson curled a free kick over the Southend defence, which cannoned off the post and hit the unfortunate Daniel Bentley on his back to go in.
Southend looked set for heartbreak until Myles Weston burst down the left flank and found Joe Piggott who stabbed the ball past the Wycombe Wanders keeper to send Southend fans into a frenzy. The season of 46 league games and 2 play-off semi finals then boiled down to just shots from the 12 yard spot.
It was Wycombe Wanderers who had the upper hand early in the shootout when Southend's Ben Coker saw his penalty saved, but he was a relieved man when he witnessed Daniel Bentley make two superb saves to send the Shrimpers back to League One.
Supporters who were decked out in Scarves, Jester Hats, Foam Hands and T-shirts from the Club Store made their voices heard all game and celebrations went long into the evening as they departed Wembley.
Just Sport would like to congratulate Southend United on their promotion and thank all supporters for their custom in the lead up to the final and of course throughout the duration of the season.
